Wine making goes through a process that includes various stages to come up with the required quality. Most times, little human intervention is required as it is a natural process. However, the winemaker should guide the process by making sure the wine has passed through all stages at the necessary time. The winemaking process basically involves a series of five key steps that will guarantee quality wine. However, deviations and additions by the winemaker are what makes different styles of wines unique in their own way. These five steps include; harvesting, crushing and pressing, fermentation, clarification, and aging and bottling.
This is the first phase where a selection of the perfect grapes is made to ensure quality wine is the final result. Grapes are the best fruits for winemaking as they have the necessary acids and tannins to produce stable wine. They also determine the flavor and sweetness of the wine. Harvesting can be done by hand or using machinery. Winemakers prefer to do it by hand as the machinery can damage a lot of fruits in the vineyard. After harvesting, the grapes are taken to the winery and sorted out to remain with the best fruit.
2. Crushing and Pressing.
This is the second stage of the winemaking process that involves the crushing of the sorted fruit. Some time back, crushing was done manually by aggressively crushing them with their feet. However, things have improved today as most winemakers now prefer using machinery to perform this function.
After Crushing and pressing, fermentation kicks in where sugar is converted into alcohol. This process can take ten days to a month to be completed — but is an essential step for making a delicious wine.
As the name dictates, this involves getting rid of wastes such as tannins and used yeast cells from the rest of the mixture. Clarification can be done through transferring the wine into barrels and tanks where the waste material will settle at the bottom, waiting for confiscation through filtration.
5. Aging and bottling.
When the winemaker has made sure the process has been completed, bottling is undertaken. However, there might also be another choice of aging the wine and bottling it later. Keep in mind, it depends on the winemaker’s goals and desires.

Unknown by many, wine requires aeration or what is commonly known as breathing. Different types of wines have different timelines required for aeration. How long should wine breathe is the question?
