Artist of the Month
September 1 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm
Julia Janeway is our featured artist this month. Stop by the tasting room to meet Julia on Sunday, September 1st from 2 to 5 pm with complimentary appetizers. Enjoy LIVE music from 3 pm to 5 pm featuring Paul Schmelling Jazz Quartet.
A Colorado native, Julia Abbott Janeway moved to the Rogue Valley in 1999 to teach English and writing to university students. What she did not expect was to fall in love with clay again and, in turn, become a professional clay artist. Setting up a workspace in the old 6 X 6-foot pumphouse behind her land in Ashland, Julia spent years working on her sgraffito method— brushing slips and underglazes over white clay, then tracing around her original drawings, and freehand carving away the negative spaces. As a result, despite being inspired by the same drawing, no two of Julia’s pieces are exactly alike.
This show at Roxy Ann is special because it is a kind of homecoming. During those years while Julia was teaching but becoming more interested in what she could do with clay, her husband Gus worked Roxy Ann’s winemaker; the vineyard and custom crush facility were just being established. Julia has great memories of often walking through the pear orchard and vineyard, picking figs on the side of one of the roads, and trying to catch a glimpse of the barn owl that made its home in the eaves of the current tasting room.
Because of these memories, Julia decided to use again some “old” drawings— like the circle rooster platters— and integrate some of those classic pieces with the new. She hopes this show will bring happiness to all those at Roxy Ann celebrating another harvest!
